Pep Guardiola unsure whether Kevin de Bruyne will be fit for clash against league leaders Liverpool

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that he is unsure whether Kevin De Bruyne will be fit for Thursday’s crucial clash at home to Liverpool.

City go into the game seven points adrift of Liverpool, with Guardiola admitting that his side’s title defence will effectively be over if they fail to beat the league leaders.

The availability of De Bruyne could be a crucial determining factor in the outcome of the game, but, after the Belgian missed City’s 3-1 victory over Southampton on Sunday with a knock, Guardiola was unable to provide a detailed update on his fitness.

As reported by goal, Guardiola said: ‘I don’t know how Kevin De Bruyne is.

‘I know it’s not serious, but I don’t know if he can play on Thursday.’

De Bruyne was City’s star player as they cruised to the title last season but he has endured a considerably difficult time so far this season owing to injury.

Indeed, De Bryune has been restricted to just six Premier League appearances this season after he suffered knee ligament damage earlier in the campaign.

Even though they were deprived of the services of the 27-year-old, City still managed to prevail past Southampton as they bounced back having lost their previous two league matches. David Silva and Sergio Aguero were both on target, with an own goal from James Ward-Prowse also helping their cause.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the Premier League this season and go into the game against City off the back of an emphatic 5-1 victory against Arsenal.

City and Liverpool drew 0-0 when they met at Anfield in October, with Riyad Mahrez missing a late penalty for Guardiola’s side.
